Project Description
In January 2000, the Institute for
Culture and Ecology conducted state and federal surveys to assess
regulatory and monitoring efforts regarding NTFP management. The
Washington Office of the US Forest Service sent copies of the federal
survey (see Appendix 9) to all forest offices and districts. IFCAE
distributed the state survey to all state forestry offices. We completed
a preliminary analysis of this data for inclusion in the policy and
management chapter of our book,
Non Timber Forest
Products in the United States.
In June 2002, we received funding from the
National Commission on Science for Sustainable Forestry to expand the
survey in order to advance understanding of the role and impact of NTFP
management in forest ecosystem sustainability and biodiversity. The
survey analysis is available in our
final report.
